Water meter maintenance technicians play a critical role in helping utilities measure and manage water usage. They install, inspect, test, and repair water meters in the field, ensuring accurate readings for billing and system performance. In addition to hands-on work with meters, they often use mobile technology to collect data, troubleshoot issues, and document service activities. Their work supports reliable water service, helps detect leaks or inefficiencies, and ensures customers are billed correctly.

Work as a meter maintenance technician is active, hands-on, and primarily outdoors. Technicians spend much of their time walking routes, working in neighborhoods, and completing tasks in a variety of weather conditions. Daily work includes installing and replacing meters, troubleshooting issues in the field, and using tools and technology to collect and verify data.
This role is closely tied to essential infrastructure; water systems operate in every community, every day. Because of that, the work is consistent and needed across regions, not limited to a single employer or location. Many positions also offer opportunities to travel, allowing technicians to work on projects in different areas as needs arise.

The Water Meter Maintenance Technician Certificate is a 4-day, in-person training held at The Water Tower in Buford, GA over the summer.
The training is built for accessibility and fast entry into the field; no prior experience or degree is required, and the program is offered at low or no cost through grant funding.
Throughout the course, participants:
The course is intentionally designed to reflect real field conditions and expectations, helping participants build practical skills that transfer across utilities and support long-term career growth. Participants also have opportunities to connect with employers who are actively hiring, helping bridge the gap between training and employment.

You don’t need months of training to get started. The Water Meter Course is designed as a short, focused training that can be completed in four days (Levels I + II). Participants gain the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience needed to take the next step toward entry-level field work without a long-term time commitment.

The Water Meter Course is built around real field work, so you learn by actually doing the job. During the course, you’ll work with live systems, install and troubleshoot meters, and get exposure to different technologies used across the industry. It’s designed to mirror what the job looks like day to day, so when you step into the field, nothing feels unfamiliar.

Water systems run every day, and they need trained meter technicians to keep them working properly. The skills you build in this course aren't tied to trends or to one employer, they’re tied to essential infrastructure people rely on.
Maintaining accurate water measurement, system efficiency, and reliable service are relevant across utilities and regions.

Utilities and contractors across the country need meter technicians, and this course is designed to help you step into those roles. Many of these roles involve traveling to where projects are happening, giving you the chance to work in different places and see the country while staying employed. From day one, you’re building toward real work, not just completing a program.
The full course consists of both Level I and Level II, which together provide a comprehensive understanding of water meter systems. Individuals entering the water industry are encouraged to complete both levels to gain both field and system-level knowledge.
Level I may be taken as a standalone option for utility personnel who need focused training on meter installation, maintenance, and field practices, but who already have a general understanding of how meters function within the overall system.
